Still Alive and With App

So about a month back I was going to post here but I never found time. The holiday season makes for a crazy schedule starting in October. I recently was looking into changing the site to something more static and I may still but, I did find a free wordpress app for my work issued iPhone. Now I won’t have to find time to sit at the pc and type up a whole big post. I am also working on adding a gallery of Collette photos. By gallery I mean all the pics we have taken of her in one place. We just got the pictures uploaded to picasa and now that they are all sorted I can maintain them much easier. Having them duplicated across 4 computers and 6 folders just wasn’t working any more.

This will hopefully be one of many updates to come including the story of how we got our HP mini netbook but, that is a story for another day. Below is my parting gift a pic of Collette sleeping during our thanksgiving trip to Wisconsin.

September and Aion

So, after getting a new position at work I have not really had much time to update the blog. It is September which means Collette is about to turn 2 and there is about 1 month left until we enter freeze at work. I was going to post about the Aion Closed Beta a month or so back but I never really got around to it. I do have a Legion that is a merger of my Guildwars play group and my co-worker’s Lineage 2 buddies. After much deliberation we cam upon the Legion name of Aeterna Lux which means eternal light in Latin. Long story short between setting up servers at work, playing the beta, and helping set up a new legion website, the chamber has fallen by the wayside.

What is coming up you ask. On the 13th Collette will be 2 and she wants a baby doll over all other things. This Sunday is the start of the week long open beta for Aion (we get to play with our legion buddies this time) and Aion releases on the 22nd. It is going to be a fun month all around and a fast moving one at that.

So, in the next several days while I am on vacation I am going to work on adding a more definitive Aion section to the site and I will be adding links to the legion. Other than updating the website I am just going to relax and be glad that after two months of crazy effort things are getting back to a more manageable flow with work and everything else.

I can’t really think of much else to say right now that would be exciting to anyone but me so I think I will work on the other parts of the site and get some more posts on the forum. Ok, the exciting thing only I really care about are I found out how to make my hosting service use PHP5 which let the auto update of wordpress run when it just broke and hung with PHP4 and they just removed the traffic quota on my hosting service so never will I risk having mass charges if more than the normal 6 people come to my site. I told you only I would care about that stuff.

Like Bashing Your Head on the Wall

So, I am working on getting our HP-UX server talking nice with active directory. I have been digging all week and finally find what looks like a solution and I am getting ready to implement and Boom! The one feature I need is not on the HP-UX version on CIFS. From the digging I have done I see that a fair amount of the time CIFS and winbind are implemented to allow AD permissions in nested groups to resolve on a samba server but nesting is about the only feature HP-UX shut off. Why, I ask, why????

Now, I am looking for ways to get around nested groups and well I ask what is going on with POSIX.  It is like moving back in time for UNIX to windows support. Anyhow, I just needed to get that out so there you go.

Please note I am not speaking on behalf of my employer or HP in this post it is just a frusterated rant of mine that I am sure will subside if you just walk away and avoid eye contact.

Best Vista Prompt Ever

So, my mother in-law’s computer died and I am tasked with recovering the data so I load the HDD into my system and get ready to wipe NTFS permissions so I can back it up to disk and I get this prompt when I click on a user folder. How does this even work???? it does work BTW but really what is with that?

Aion Obsession

So I have been tracking the news on Aion and discovered that they not only released information on the collectors edition but they announced that preorder packs with beta access are going to be available starting the 9th of this month (that’s next Tuesday). In digging further I found that they are already at some stores and after failing to find any in Minnesota we helped a friend track one down in Texas. We are awaiting the arrival of the key s locally so we can enjoy the beta goodness this weekend so I am excited.

I will admit I am getting ready to retire Guild Wars and move on but there are no MMO’s that have really looked that appealing. I am hoping Aion is as good as it sounds. I already started the client download. I guess only time will tell.

For those of you not in the know Aion is the new MMO from Ncsoft and has been in development since the second expansion of Guild Wars released. I am glad to see that it is finally coming.

Crazy time with Collette

So, after being in the new place for about two weeks and having a long weekend I have had some time to see how much Collette is growing. She is now showing fear towards strangers even if those strangers are her grandparents, aunts, and uncles. She spent the afternoon playing with her cousin and running around at my fathers house and the park just out their back yard. She was all excited to play on the slides and finally learned how to go down feet first rather than head first. While we were there we went to a covered slide and she was afraid to go down until her cousin went down then she was ready. As she went down I saw her start to hit the first bend when she stopped. I was about to go get her out when her cousin and grandpa encouraged her and she went down the slide. after I asked her if it was fun or scary to which she replied scary in a tiny voice.

We also discovered that she likes baseball well more half dropping the ball then putting it in a glove but still it is fun. I am thinking that I am going to have to get her a glove soon and well I know she will not be able to throw we may be able to roll it on the ground and just let her run around more with a glove on chanting “BASEBALL! BASEBALL!”.

Sorry that my post has no point but I just felt like writing about it after all if I don’t no one will.

Internet Explorer 8

So this weekend much to my surprise IE8 was pushed out to my computer. I don’t mind that it happened I was meaning to try it out but it was pushed a few months ahead of what I though it would be. So after a few days with it I am having trouble seeing what is different about IE8 and IE 7 other than it is trying very hard to help me surf not how I want to. The second thing I thought I would see is the ability to take a tab and make it into a new window, I though some browser out there already did that. I also find it funny that after years of not wanting to comply with W3C standards they decided to become more compatible and when running in IE compatibility they display a torn page (see below)

 compatible

So, does this torn page mean that they are actually admitting that IE pages are in some way broken or am I reading to much into it. THe other confusing feature is the inprivate feature why would I need to brows in private on my computer I can also see that feature as a problem for business use.

Overall I like IE8 it is a bit slicker than IE 7 and if it ever stops detecting everything as torn page it will be nice to work with. Considering how quickly they forced IE8 n users I wonder if they will even wait a month when IE8.1 comes out this summer.

Well there is some food for thought hope it didn’t give you indigestion.

Sticky Keys Epidemic

Here is a short rant, I remember having to fix computers at St. Cloud State that had they shift key stick AKA sticky keys and well I have not thought about it until last week. over the course of a week I had 4 different cases where either myself or someone I was talking to needed to check that sticky keys was on. I just thought it was odd that I went about 4 years never even hearing about sticky keys and in one week I had to deal with it 4 times. remember it’s shift 5 times to toggle it on and off now everyone try it!

I decided after years of having a domain that was not really mine but more a shared space for myself family and guilds it was time to really take on a space that was only for me and my thoughts. I hope you like it.

The Transparency of Social Media

So recently I have been reading about how peoples blogs and Facebook accounts and the like have and/or can impact their work life. Recently a woman lost her job because she was seen logged into Facebook when she was home sick claiming to be too ill to sit in front of a computer. Where am I going with this you ask well…After starting this blog like within 24 hours I received a new policy at work explaining appropriate use of social media and what you should and should not say on a blog or in Facebook. The general rules I have followed is that my personal life is not my work life so I avoid blogging about work.

The question I have recently been pondering is what defines the line between work and personal contacts. My example is when there is a major event in your life some times you can not freely post it for fear of one group or another reacting in a bad way. If there is an issue with say home life do you really want your coworker friends to see it and the inverse is also true. I really do not have any idea where that line is and also can’t help but wonder what self sensoring must occur for many people for the aforementioned reasons.

So, back to the previous focus, why is social media and your personal life so important to employers people are people and we act one way when working and another when we are off the clock. also the larger question is why do people feel the need to post their deepest innermost thoughts for the public to see only to feel betrayed when someone finds what they have disclosed and it impacts their life.

I guess I will never really find the answers to these questions but I thought I would put this out there and see what other people thought.
